“In an era of ‘flawless AI” imagery, I’ve been experimenting with new substraits that evoke dramatic man-made textures and lean into the real life flaws and foibles that make us delightfully human. I’ve created a pair of hand painted tapestries from a long Turkish rug runner found at a great bazaar in Inglewood. I quite like all the irregularities and bumps of the woven carpet and have used dry brush paint techniques and even squeezed paint right out of the tube to take advantage of the rough texture. The black outlines and painted faces that evolved along the way bring to mind stained-glass panels, and the geometric shapes that give them an art deco feel that I quite like.”
