Grey Gardens is a 1975 documentary by Albert and David Maysles. This painting is my take on the haunting movie poster with ‘Little Edie’ Beale standing before the derelict mansion where she and her mother lived. The image, and the film itself, leave you with more questions than answers and wanting to know more. This is all about story-telling and I’ve opted to render the piece with layers of acrylic paint intentionally scratched to convey texture and ‘patina’. The barnboard frame was deliberately chosen to echo the structure, which is arguably the third character in the film.
